Manage company events using Workplace groups, events, and chat
Facebook has a mission of “giving people the power to build community and bringing the world closer together”. One way to achieve this internally is to use Workplace groups to foster creation of communities around various causes.
To this end, every year for International Women’s Day (March 8th) Facebook organises several events that take place over the course of a week which seek to raise awareness around women’s issues, inspire young and aspiring women through notable women speaking panels, and much more. The organisation of these many global events – in 2018 under the banner of #PressForProgress – was all planned, managed and hosted on Workplace through the use of groups (including MCGs), events, and Workplace chat.
How to do it in your organisation in three simple steps:
- Create core community groups around specific topics, e.g. ‘Women @ Facebook’. These groups act as permanent fora to exchange ideas on these topics and to host all sessions via individual event invites. Ensure that the group’s name is intuitive and that all desired attendees have been added as members so as to enable their participation in the discussions
- Create working groups: Use groups to project manage the various work streams and initiatives to be held during the day/week/month-long event. Use ‘Multi-company’ type groups (MCGs) to collaborate with external agencies, consultants, panel speakers and/or attendees, and ‘Teams & Projects’ type groups to handle the day-to-day preparations in the run-up to the event. Meanwhile, all official event communications should be kept to the core group.
- Use Workplace Chat for instant messaging: Create a group chat for people managing the day-to-day preparations for the event to collaborate with each other.
