Crowdsource ideas and new initiatives from across your organisation
With over 2 million employees across the globe, Walmart saw an opportunity to tap into the incredible collective knowledge of its workforce to generate new ideas and innovate. Under the sponsorship of Clay Johnson, the Walmart CIO, the company piloted a new crowdsourcing initiative called “Value Makers” in the organisation.
The initiative leveraged Workplace as the platform to run 90-day campaigns focused on generating new ideas around specific topics, such as sustainability or employee productivity. Employees from across the CIO’s organisation submitted, liked, engaged, and commented on ideas posted by colleagues on Workplace.
Behind the scenes, Walmart used Sideways 6, an idea management platform, to measure and analyse the engagement on all submissions. These analytics enabled the campaign team to see which ideas were gaining traction and qualified for evaluation.
One campaign saw over 200 ideas submitted, which were narrowed down to the top five based on Workplace engagement. Ultimately, three of the five submissions were turned into tangible projects. Walmart intends to continue this initiative over the course of 2018.
Do it in your organisation in three simple steps:
- Identify focus areas where you want to collect and capture employee ideas (e.g., sustainability). Create a dedicated group where employees can submit and “vote” on new ideas
- Create time-bound campaigns (e.g, 1 month, 1 quarter, etc.) to drive ideas on a specific topic
- Measure Workplace engagement and activity to identify top submissions to be evaluated by leadership. Close the loop by keeping employees up-to-date with the top submissions and those that are implemented.
