Illumina used Workplace to create a centralised spot to build community, excitement, and engagement around their annual Global Sales Meeting- before, during, and after the event. Illumina used a group to share meeting logistics, answer questions, post conference resources, and post fun polling about speaker presentations.

At the event, Illumina created Workplace opportunities physically with a photobooth and selfie stations to get people posting into the group. Post-event, the engagement continued, as resources like video, recaps, key takeaways, etc. were still being shared by both sales leadership and attendees even more than a month later.

Illumina deployed Workplace successfully to 100% of the company’s employees in early 2017 and has been innovating on the platform since then. Workplace is the foundation to communication at Illumina and is embedded in all the company’s core communication processes.

How to do it in your organisation in three simple steps

  1. Before the event: Launch the event group at least 3 weeks prior to the event. Post conference resources, use polls to hear what is top-of-mind for attendees, encourage leadership to share their excitement and vision.
  2. During the event: Post polls for feedback and engagement during key presentations. Encourage influencers to share key takeaways real-time. Use photobooths and selfie stations for contests, photos, and videos.
  3. After the event: Use the group to distribute follow-ups and other resources. Ask for Keep, Start, Stop feedback for next year’s event.
